Acceptable Use Policy
TAG Online is dedicated to providing services of the highest quality. As a provider of resources which may be shared amongst multiple clients, it is therefore incumbent upon us to assure that the actions of one client don't have an adverse impact on the services received by other clients.
In addition to this care with which we treat our clients, we also feel it important to take equivalent care of the Internet Environment in general. Every client of TAG Online is investing significant resources in the Internet. To permit the actions of a few to sully or abuse this environment would have a negative impact upon TAG Online clients and their investments.
With these issues in mind, TAG Online has created the following policy statement. This statement defines a set of actions that, because of how they would impact others, are not permitted. In some cases, sanctions are also described.
This document represents an agreement between TAG Online and each TAG Online client. It is subject to change without notice, and we suggest that it be occasionally reviewed. Any questions about this document may be directed to policy@tagonline.com.
- A TAG Online Client will take all reasonable care and precautions to avoid having an account compromised and exposed to a security failure or unauthorized access. Usernames and passwords will be controlled accordingly. Passwords will be selected so as to not be subject to Dictionary Attack. Usernames and passwords will not be given out indiscriminantly, and passwords will be changed occasionally and whenever the possibility of exposure exists.
- A TAG Online Client will not attempt to gain unauthorized access to or tamper with any part of the TAG Online network. This includes, but is not limited to, accessing the accounts of other users on shared machines, accessing machines to which the Client is not granted access, and gaining privileged access to any TAG Online hardware or software.
- A TAG Online Client will not attempt to gain unauthorized access to or tamper with any other machine reachable via the Internet. This includes, but is not limited to, the transmission of malicious programs to any user by any means.
- A TAG Online Client will not send unsolicited bulk email (spam). This restriction covers the transmission of such email from TAG Online's network, as well as from any other source when the purpose of said email is to advertise services hosted within TAG Online's network. In support of this goal, all mailing lists which are run on TAG Online servers, on servers colocated at TAG Online, or which advertise web sites on TAG Online servers or on servers colocated at TAG Online, must be completely confirmed opt-in. This means that recipients must request to be placed on the mailing list, and that these requests are confirmed in an fashion that guarantees that the recipient of mail at the subscription address is in fact the party requesting the subscription.. The confirmation process is required to prevent lists from becoming a tool of abuse via forged subscriptions of third parties.
- A TAG Online Client will not consume excessive shared resources, such as system memory or processing time. As a part of this restriction, daemons - programs which run all of the time - must be discussed with TAG Online ahead of time. In turn, TAG Online provides a mechanism by which daemons will be automatically restarted when and if a machine reboots. Please note: this restriction applies only to clients using shared servers.
- A TAG Online Client will not make use of a shared Web Server for the transmission of bulk email (ie. a mailing list). TAG Online provides this service using different hardware, which is optimized specifically for email use. Large volumes of email transmission from a Web Server may adversely effect its ability to serve its primary purpose: the delivery of web pages.
- A TAG Online Client will not make use of TAG Online resources to store or distribute materials which are illegal or to which the Client does not have an established right of use.
- Unless explicit arrangements are made, TAG Online POP, IMAP, or SMTP servers may not be used to manage mailing lists. For this purpose, a mailing list is a collection of more than 25 recipients to which email is sent on a regular or periodic basis.
